ColorFoil 2.0

From Coloured Solar Innovation to Industrial Scale

Scaling structural colour technology for building-integrated photovoltaics from proven prototypes to industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing and real-world demonstration.

Making Solar Part of the Architecture

Colour is becoming increasingly important as solar energy moves from conventional rooftop installations into the building envelope.

ColorFoil 2.0 develops a structural coloured interlayer that enables photovoltaic modules to achieve attractive, angle-independent colours while maintaining high energy performance.

Building on the results of the first ColorFoil project, ColorFoil 2.0 takes the technology from small-scale prototypes towards industrial production. The project will scale both the nanoimprinted foil and the functional colour layers using roll-to-roll manufacturing, qualify the technology in photovoltaic modules and demonstrate it in real-world BIPV applications.

Solar Without Compromising Architecture

Conventional photovoltaic modules are designed primarily for energy generation – not architectural integration.

For façades, roofs and visually sensitive buildings, colour and appearance can determine whether solar technology can be integrated at all.

ColorFoil addresses this challenge by combining structural colour, high optical efficiency and manufacturing flexibility in a foil-based solution.

The ambition is to give architects, building owners and BIPV manufacturers greater freedom to integrate solar energy into buildings – while preserving both architectural expression and energy performance.

Collaboration Across the Value Chain

ColorFoil 2.0 brings together expertise across materials, roll-to-roll manufacturing, photovoltaic qualification, module production and system integration
